Complete GST Billing Guide for Retail Shops in India

GST (Goods and Services Tax) compliance is mandatory for all registered businesses in India. This guide covers everything retail shop owners need to know about GST billing.

Who Needs GST Registration?

You must register for GST if: - Annual turnover exceeds ₹40 lakhs (₹20 lakhs for special category states) - You sell goods inter-state - You sell through e-commerce platforms - You're a casual taxable person

GST Invoice Requirements

Every GST invoice must contain:

Mandatory Fields 1. Supplier details: Name, address, GSTIN 2. Invoice number: Unique, sequential, max 16 characters 3. Invoice date: Date of issue 4. Buyer details: Name, address, GSTIN (if registered) 5. HSN/SAC code: For goods worth >₹5 crores turnover 6. Item details: Description, quantity, unit, value 7. Tax details: CGST, SGST, IGST rates and amounts 8. Total amount: Including all taxes 9. Place of supply: State code 10. Signature: Digital or physical

Tax Rate Slabs - 0% - Essential items (milk, vegetables, etc.) - 5% - Basic necessities - 12% - Standard goods - 18% - Most products - 28% - Luxury items

How GST Calculation Works

Intra-State Sales (Within Same State) - CGST: 50% of total GST - SGST: 50% of total GST

Example: ₹1,000 product at 18% GST - CGST: ₹90 (9%) - SGST: ₹90 (9%) - Total: ₹1,180

Inter-State Sales (Different States) - IGST: Full GST amount

Example: ₹1,000 product at 18% GST - IGST: ₹180 (18%) - Total: ₹1,180

HSN Codes Explained

HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) codes classify goods: - 4-digit HSN: Turnover ₹1.5-5 crore - 6-digit HSN: Turnover >₹5 crore

Common retail HSN codes: - 0401: Milk and cream - 1006: Rice - 2201: Mineral water - 3304: Cosmetics - 6109: T-shirts

Filing GST Returns

GSTR-1 (Outward Supplies) - Due: 11th of next month - Contains: All sales invoices

GSTR-3B (Summary Return) - Due: 20th of next month - Contains: Summary of sales, purchases, tax liability

Annual Return (GSTR-9) - Due: December 31st - Contains: Consolidated annual data
